Afrobeats is just as big as R&B, Hip Hop – Fireboy DML
Budding Nigerian singer Fireboy DML, known for hits like ‘Scatter‘, recently shared his perspective on Afrobeats, highlighting its current stature in global music.
In a podcast with Noisey, Fireboy asserted that Afrobeats has evolved beyond being just a genre—it is now a culture and a movement with a rich history. He emphasized its energetic vibe and distinctive rhythm, characterizing it as more than ordinary music.
Fireboy also underscored the uniqueness of his own brand of Afrobeats and expressed his commitment to elevating it on the global stage. He noted that as the world increasingly recognizes Afrobeats, he sees himself as a key player in placing it prominently on the global music map.
The singer said; “I always say this, honesty is the soul of songwriting. It doesn’t have to be your story. It could be someone else’s story. It doesn’t matter.
“As long as it’s honest, when you put it out, someone somewhere is going to relate with it and that’s all that matters.
“That’s what I bring into my version of Afrobeats. Afrobeats is known for vibe, the energy and the rhythm. But I bring that intention, that songwriting feel.
“[I’m] Trying to put Afrobeats on the map. It’s just as big as Hip Hop & RnB if you let it. It’s a culture, it’s a movement. It has history. Now more than ever the world is paying attention.”
His comments reflect the growing international recognition of Afrobeats and the efforts of artists like himself to contribute to its global expansion and influence.
