Van Dijk charged by FA following explosive red card reaction
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is facing charges from the FA due to his response after being shown a red card during the match against Newcastle United.
The incident took place after the captain of the Reds was sent off for a late challenge on Newcastle forward Alexander Isak at St. James’ Park on Sunday. Despite a late double from Darwin Nunez, Jurgen Klopp’s team managed to secure a 2-1 victory.
An FA statement read: ”Virgil Van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August. It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute. Virgil Van Dijk has until Friday, 1 September to provide a response to this charge.”
Already slated to serve a one-match suspension for his actions, the Dutch international could potentially face additional penalties. It remains uncertain whether Liverpool will opt to contest the charges leveled against the defender.
On Sunday, the Merseyside team will be hosting Aston Villa in a Premier League match, aiming to continue their undefeated beginning to the new season.
