ERLING HAALAND PIPS DE BRUYNE & MESSI TO UEFA MEN’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD.
UEFA has officially named Erling Braut Haaland, the Manchester City striker, as the recipient of the prestigious 2022/23 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
This announcement took place during the 2023–24 Champions League group stage draw event, held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
Haaland secured this accolade, surpassing fellow nominees Lionel Messi, the Inter-Miami striker, and his own teammate Kevin De Bruyne.
Kevin De Bruyne, renowned for his playmaking skills, made a remarkable contribution to Manchester City’s treble success, providing 31 assists and scoring 10 goals. The Belgian forward, who had one of his best seasons, plays an integral role in Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup.
Lionel Messi, after leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and receiving the Golden Ball award, was a strong contender for the award. The former Barcelona superstar has previously won this accolade twice but fell short of securing his third as Erling Haaland emerged as the recipient.
Erling Haaland played a pivotal role in guiding Manchester City to an unprecedented treble during the previous season, clinching titles in the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup.
His outstanding goal-scoring abilities were on full display, as the 23-year-old forward netted a remarkable 36 goals during his debut season in England, following his £51.2 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund. He finished the season as the Premier League’s top scorer.
Notably, Haaland achieved multiple records during his debut season, becoming the first player to score 20 Premier League goals before January and setting the record for the fastest ten Premier League goals, among others.
In the Champions League, the former RB Salzburg star continued to shine, claiming the top-scorer title with 12 goals, a significant lead over the next player on the list, Mohamed Salah.
Furthermore, Haaland established a new record for the most goals scored by a player from an English club in a single Champions League season.
