Speaking during an appearance on the Keeping It Real With Jima podcast, the veteran producer reflected on his teenage years, revealing that he struggled with self-image and often found himself turned down by girls he admired.

According to Don Jazzy, the experiences left a deeper emotional mark than many people might expect, shaping how he viewed himself long after leaving school. He explained that while he eventually found success in the music industry, the memories of those early rejections remained with him.

Recalling that period of his life, he said:

“I wasn’t good-looking during my secondary school days. Thank God for music because back then I was constantly being rejected by girls. But after I became successful, I went back to look for all the girls who rejected me. But almost all of them were already married…”

The renowned producer revealed that after establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s most successful music executives, he felt the need to revisit that chapter of his life. For him, reconnecting with some of the women who had rejected him was less about revenge or validation and more about finding closure from a lingering emotional wound.

However, by the time he tracked down many of them, most had already settled into their own lives and families. Despite that, Don Jazzy said the experience ultimately helped him move forward.

Seeing how far he had come in his career and personal development allowed him to put those old insecurities into perspective. He noted that meeting some of his former schoolmates and reflecting on his journey helped him heal from feelings that had followed him for years.

Known today as one of the most influential figures in African music, Don Jazzy’s candid admission offered fans a rare glimpse into the personal struggles behind his success. His story serves as a reminder that confidence challenges and emotional scars can affect anyone, regardless of fame or achievement, and that personal growth often involves confronting experiences from the past.
