American rapper Amala Dlamini, popularly known as Doja Cat, revealed that she feels a sense of freedom after losing 500,000 followers on social media.

The rapper expressed her relief on her Instagram story, stating she feels better now that she has less followers. As she noted that she now knew those who actually loved her, she compared her sentiments to fighting a giant beast that had been weighing her down.

She posted, “Seeing all these people unfollow me makes me feel like I’ve defeated a large beast that has been holding me down for so long and it feels like I can reconnect with the people who really matter and love me for who I am, and not who I was.”

After criticizing her following in July 2023, Doja lost hundreds of thousands of followers. It all began when her followers adopted the star’s nickname for them at the beginning of her career—”kittens”—and adopted it for themselves.

Unfortunately, Doja did not take kindly to that and lashed out at them saying, “My fans don’t get to name themselves s**t. If you call yourself a ‘kitten’ or f****** ‘kittenz’ that means you need to get off your phone, and get a job and help your parents with the house”.

The conversation between her followers didn’t end there; one of them questioned her whether she liked her fans, to which she replied that she didn’t because she didn’t know them.

She lost 237,758 Instagram followers in two days as a result of her public argument with her fans, according to data provided to Billboard by the Meta-owned company. After then, the number increased, and she has now lost roughly 500,000 followers.
