Davido warns African Americans against relocating to Africa, cites economic challenges
Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has advised African Americans considering relocating to Africa to carefully evaluate the realities of living on the continent.
Speaking during an interview on the ‘Big Homies House‘ podcast, the music icon highlighted systemic challenges and economic instability as significant concerns.
While acknowledging the growing interest in Africa, Davido painted a realistic picture of the situation, emphasizing that current conditions might not be favourable for those seeking a better life. Using Nigeria as an example, he stated, “It’s not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles.”
The singer outlined the struggles faced by many Nigerians, including the high cost of oil despite the country being a major producer.
He expressed frustration over systemic inefficiencies, saying, “We Nigerians, the exchange rate is messed up, the oil prices [are] too high. Imagine a country producing oil and we are paying more for oil than countries importing it. We do not have the best leaders, and that is a fact.”
However, Davido clarified that his remarks were not an attempt to discredit Africa but rather to offer a balanced perspective.
While Africa’s global appeal has grown thanks to its thriving entertainment and cultural scenes, he cautioned against being misled by the “smokescreen” these industries can create.
“My aim is to show off the little parts and leave the slums out of the frame,” Davido explained, referencing the balance he tries to strike in portraying the continent’s vibrancy while acknowledging its challenges.
Davido, renowned for his pride in African culture, continues to use his platform to advocate for progress while showcasing the continent’s rich heritage.
Known for hits like ‘Fall‘ and ‘Timeless,’ the superstar remains committed to highlighting both the beauty and the pressing issues facing Africa today.
