Court Orders Arrest of Social Media Personality VeryDarkMan Over Alleged Defamation Of Mercy Chinwo

ABUJA – The Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of popular social media personality, Verydarkman (VDM), following his alleged defamatory remarks against renowned gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo.
The warrant, issued on Thursday, March 13, 2025, by Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna, comes after VDM failed to appear in court as summoned on March 5, 2025. The court had earlier requested his presence to respond to allegations concerning his public statements regarding Chinwo.
Confirming the development to Channels Television, VDM’s legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju, described the case as a media trial, suggesting that the prosecution was more concerned with public perception than legal proceedings. “Yes, a bench warrant has been issued against him for failure to show up in court. They are just interested in a media trial; they are not serious about prosecution,” Adeyanju stated.
The lawyer further revealed that he had previously requested to represent VDM in court, but the appeal was denied, with the magistrate insisting on the defendant’s personal appearance.
The controversy stems from VDM’s social media claims accusing Chinwo of being entangled in a contractual dispute involving the alleged misappropriation of $345,000. The accusations were linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, popularly known as Eezee Tee.
In response, Chinwo reportedly presented evidence in court, including emails and payment receipts, to refute VDM’s claims. According to her legal representatives, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi of the Abuja-based Law Corridor, the allegations were not only false but also damaging to the singer’s reputation.
Legal experts representing the complainant argue that VDM’s actions contravene Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and Section 391 of the Penal Code. The case continues to unfold as the authorities work towards enforcing the court order.
