Chelsea have wasted little time making their mark in the summer transfer market, reportedly reaching an agreement to sign highly rated Atalanta defender Marco Palestra in a deal worth up to £47 million.

The move is set to become the first major signing of the club’s new era under Xabi Alonso, who recently took charge at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The agreement is understood to be worth more than £43 million initially, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the package close to £47 million.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the transfer is effectively complete.
“Verbal agreement in place between all parties. Atalanta to receive a package over €55m, plus a sell-on clause, for a long-term deal for a talented Italian RWB. Chelsea hijacks Inter’s move and get new talent for Xabi Alonso,” Romano stated on social media.
Chelsea’s ability to secure the defender is being viewed as a significant early victory for Alonso, particularly given the strong interest from Inter Milan. The Serie A champions had been heavily linked with the player and were widely considered favourites to keep him in Italy following his impressive loan spell at Cagliari.
Palestra’s stock has risen rapidly over the past year after a series of standout performances that showcased both his defensive quality and attacking potential from wide areas. His displays reportedly attracted interest from several top European clubs, but Chelsea’s persistence ultimately proved decisive.

While Inter remained keen to complete a deal, reports suggest they were unable to match the financial package and personal terms offered by the Premier League side. Once Chelsea met Atalanta’s valuation, the player is understood to have identified Stamford Bridge as his preferred destination.
The 21-year-old’s versatility is seen as one of his biggest strengths. Comfortable as a wing-back, right-back, or full-back on either side of defence, he offers tactical flexibility that could prove valuable as Alonso begins shaping his squad.
Having recently earned his first senior call-up for the Italy national football team, Palestra arrives with growing expectations and the reputation of one of Italian football’s brightest young defensive prospects.
For Chelsea, the signing represents more than just a new addition; it signals the beginning of a new project under Alonso and an ambitious approach to rebuilding for the future.
