Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has officially released his first single of 2025, ‘Update,’ and fans are buzzing over its nostalgic elements.

The song, which dropped today, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, has sparked discussions after it was confirmed that Burna Boy sampled an iconic track from the past.

In ‘Update,’ Burna Boy draws inspiration from Soul II Soul’s 1989 classic, ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me).’ The original song, featuring Caron Wheeler, was a defining hit of its era, blending R&B, dance, and British soul influences.

It topped the UK Singles Chart, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., and earned prestigious accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1990.

Known for seamlessly fusing global influences into his music, Burna Boy’s use of ‘Back to Life’ adds a fresh twist to a timeless classic.

The release of ‘Update‘ sets the tone for his upcoming eighth studio album, ‘No Sign of Weakness,’ which is expected to arrive later this year.

With the single now available on streaming platforms, fans are eager to see how Burna Boy continues to reinvent classic sounds while maintaining his signature Afrofusion style.
