Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has addressed Kylian Mbappe’s underwhelming start at the club, describing the forward’s struggles as a “team issue” rather than an individual one.

Mbappe’s highly anticipated summer move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid came with lofty expectations.

However, despite joining a star-studded lineup featuring Vinícius Junior and Jude Bellingham, both the player and the team have yet to fully meet the high standards set in La Liga and the Champions League.

After experimenting with Mbappe on the left wing during a 3-0 victory over Leganés, Ancelotti appeared hopeful for improvement. While the Frenchman scored in Madrid’s 4-2 win over Getafe, he has yet to deliver the consistent brilliance fans anticipated.

“His [Mbappe’s] problem is everyone’s problem,” Ancelotti remarked post-match. “We need to maximize the potential of all involved—himself, myself, and the entire team. This is not about one player. It’s about a collective that has struggled with continuity and reaching its full potential.”

Ancelotti emphasized that Mbappe, like the rest of the squad, is working hard to improve. “He knows he needs to do better, and he’s committed to trying. It’s not just about adapting to a new team. He has scored and provided assists, but there’s still room for growth—just like with everyone else.”

Reflecting on the missed penalty against Liverpool, Ancelotti dismissed overemphasis on individual moments. “Players miss penalties. What matters is how we support each other and focus on the collective issues. The key is improving as a group.”

The coach also held himself accountable, acknowledging that the team’s form reflects on his own performance. “I’m not satisfied, and I’m working just as hard to bring out the best version of myself and the team. I’m confident we’ll overcome this as we always do.”

Real Madrid will look to turn the tide when they face Athletic Club on Wednesday in La Liga.
