The thing about being Wizkid is, there’s never a peak. Because every other year, there are more and more opportunities to grow bigger and stronger.
When he released “Ayo” in 2014, as his last album under Banky W’s EME, he attained his biggest height yet. Making classic hits from a classic album. That was more than his mates were doing, at the time.
Then in 2015, the Drake stuff happened and “Ojuelegba” the remix became a big one, and Drizzy put him on his “One Dance” hit. Wizkid became such a hot cake in the international market, making him one of the most sought after from the dark continent.
2016 even came with more groundbreaking prospects, as international deals were underway, and he was gearing to drop an album.
2017 was the year he came in with “Come Closer” featuring Drake, his biggest hit on the international front, to date. The rest of that year was spent dropping an album, “Sounds from the Other Side”, which featured a host of foreign guys. And he later came back, to let us know he still got the African vibe we love him for (“Odoo”, “Medicine”).
2018, he put out “Soco”, creating the first big hit of the year and in many rights, the ‘Song of the Year’ and also one of the biggest team efforts ever made in history. Smashing records like Mavins’ classic “Dorobucci” back in the day. Later, “Master Groove” and “Fever” followed, and it’s just like no matter what happens, Wizkid always manages to come back stronger.
So the silence this year wasn’t really uncalled for. It meant a lot that Wiz was taking a break. Because if Wiz’s back from something, that’s some check we owe him. We still got “Brown Skin Girl” the duet with Beyonce that may earn him a Soul Train Award. And then, “Low” with Larry Gaaga. “Jah Bless Me” was also leaked. But, we waited for “Joro” and his fourth studio album, like the Second Coming of Jesus. We knew one thing, though, both had to come before this year ends.
“Ghetto Love” came weeks ago, replacing “Joro” as Wizkid’s first single and reminding us of what Wizkid really is; a whole mood!
If you’re a fan, or you’ve been following the Starboy movement, you’ll know that every single, every freestyle, every video, every Instagram post, every Tweet, every show, has led to this point where Wizkid is, today. The point where we just say “this man is a Legend, give him the fucking plaque!”

“Joro” just came in anyway and we’re actually expecting more material in the coming days and weeks, in anticipation of the album. Wizkid has earned whatever hype he gets. Now, is “Joro” good enough to smash all other records this year? Are fans hungry enough to make it that big? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
