Burna Boy Shares Deep Take on Afrobeats’ Evolution

Global Afrobeats icon Burna Boy recently graced The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he opened up about the remarkable evolution of Afrobeats and its deep cultural roots in Africa.

During the engaging conversation, the Grammy winner described the genre’s worldwide domination as nothing short of a “return to the source,” tracing its rhythm, influence, and energy back to the continent that birthed it all.

“I always say everything in life goes in a circle,” Burna Boy told Hudson. “The starting point is where everything eventually returns, and the starting point of everything is Africa, including music.”

According to the City Boys crooner, Afrobeats’ rise to global prominence isn’t a coincidence; it’s a cultural cycle completing itself. “Afrobeats as it is now,” he continued, “is just a manifestation of things coming back to the starting point.”

The conversation later took a nostalgic turn when Hudson asked about Burna Boy’s long-rumored family connection to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. With a proud smile, Burna confirmed that his grandfather, the legendary broadcaster Benson Idonije, was indeed Fela’s very first manager.

“Yeah, my grandfather was Fela’s first manager,” he said, acknowledging the legacy that helped shape his creative path. He added with a touch of humor, “I should have brought him, but he’s a bit too old now. He doesn’t really like to fly.”

The moment drew laughter from the audience but also underscored something deeper in Burna Boy’s awareness of the lineage he represents. From Fela’s revolutionary sound to his own global Afrobeats movement, the connection runs through generations.

As the interview wrapped up, Burna Boy’s reflections stood as both a tribute and a reminder that while Afrobeats continues to conquer stages worldwide, its heart still beats strongest in Africa, where the story first began.
