Bukayo Saka found himself at the center of Champions League drama on and off the pitch during Arsenal’s quarter-final second-leg clash against Real Madrid—and it wasn’t just about football.

The young Gunner missed a golden opportunity early in the first half when his cheeky ‘Panenka’ penalty was easily saved by Thibaut Courtois in the 13th minute. The miss came after Arsenal were awarded a spot-kick following a clumsy challenge by Raul Asencio during a corner.
While Saka laughed off the miss post-match, joking that he “tried” and would “review it later,” things took a more dramatic turn as players walked off at halftime.
Injured Madrid veteran Dani Carvajal, dressed in casuals due to an ACL injury, was on the sidelines waiting for his teammates when Saka approached.
At first, it looked like a warm gesture—Carvajal gave him a friendly pat and handshake. But moments later, he grabbed Saka’s arm, pulled him in, and the two exchanged playful but tense slaps as they entered the tunnel.
Whether it was banter, frustration, or something in between, Saka brushed it off like a pro.
The best response? He scored.

In the second half, Saka coolly slotted home a stunning chipped goal past Courtois—his form of redemption as Arsenal cruised to a 2-1 win on the night, sealing a memorable 5-1 aggregate victory.
Mikel Arteta, speaking after the match, playfully said he “could’ve given Saka a clip round the ear” for the failed Panenka, but praised his resilience and mentality:
“He had the courage to take it—that’s what he thought was best. I was more concerned about the emotional part of it. But the way he handles pressure, especially at this age, is just incredible.”
Saka himself stayed composed:
“These things happen… I was confident. I learn from every moment, but right now, I just want to enjoy the victory.”
Arsenal will now face Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, and Saka—battle-tested, unbothered, and still brilliant—will be key to their ambitions.
