Bruno Fernandes reveals how Man United have proven doubters wrong this season.
By competing for a spot in the UEFA Champions League this season, Bruno Fernandes thinks Manchester United has defied expectations.
With a game still to play, the Red Devils have a game in hand over their bitter rivals Liverpool and are presently sitting in fourth place on the Premier League rankings.
Man United had previously maintained a far more dominant lead in the battle to finish in the top four, but with consecutive league losses to Brighton and West Ham, Liverpool has closed the distance going into the season’s last few games.
Star player Fernandes was eager to emphasize in an interview with Sky Sports about the top four competitions that many supporters and observers initially didn’t expect Man Utd to be in the running.
He said: “This club has to be in that position. And I think these players deserve to be there too. The team has done a great job this season when no one thought United could be fighting for the top four. At the beginning of the season no one put our team in the top six.
“We knew we could be even higher. And soon this club will be fighting for even bigger things.”
The Red Devils have returned to their cup form this season in addition to doing well in the Premier League under new manager Erik Ten Hag. Man United is scheduled to compete against inner-city rivals Man City in the FA Cup final later this month. Man United has already won the Carabao Cup this season.
Man United have played a lot of football so far in 2022–23 as a result of their commitments to several tournaments, with Fernandes playing 54 games so far.
When questioned about it, Fernandes acknowledged that weariness was ‘present’ but said that his players needed to be equipped to handle it.
“Tiredness is always there. We play many games so that’s normal, but our club we want to play as many games as possible, to be in a position to win trophies and reach finals. You have to find a way to rest when possible.”
Manchester United will welcome Wolves to Old Trafford on Saturday in the Premier League.
