Birmingham City has parted ways with Wayne Rooney following the Blues’ defeat against Leeds United on New Year’s Day. The loss resulted in the club slipping to the 20th position in the championship table, a significant drop from the sixth place they held when Rooney took charge in October.

Rooney’s tenure at St Andrew’s saw him secure only two victories in 15 matches, and he struggled to win over the support of the club’s fanbase. The decision to sack John Eustace earlier in the season, despite guiding the club into play-off positions, had already unsettled supporters, placing additional pressure on Rooney to achieve a positive start.

Unfortunately, a disappointing run of form left Rooney in a precarious position, and the board ultimately took action following Birmingham City’s descent to 20th place in the league table.

‘Birmingham City has today parted company with Manager, Wayne Rooney, and First Team Coach, Carl Robinson,’ a statement read.

‘Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the Board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club.

‘The Club’s Board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organisation its fans and community deserve.

‘The Board would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Wayne and Carl for all of their efforts.’
