Sadio Mane suspended by Bayern Munich over Leroy Sane punch.
Bayern Munich have suspended Sadio Mane indefinitely following his altercation with teammate Leroy Sane.
Mane was alleged to have attacked Sane in the dressing room immediately after Bayern’s 3-0 Champions League loss to Manchester City, inflicting a mark on the German before being pulled away by teammates.
Club officials held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the incident and now the club have confirmed Mane will be suspended and fined.
“Sadio Mane, 3, will not be in the FC Bayern squad for the home game against 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday,” a statement read. “The reason is misconduct by Mane after FC Bayern’s Champions League game at Manchester City. In addition, Mane will receive a fine.”
It’s unclear at this time if Mane will miss more than one game during his suspension.
Oliver Kahn, the CEO, and Hasan Salihamidzic, the sports director, were in charge of the negotiations over a potential sanction for Mane. According to early rumors, Bayern Munich was even prepared to sell the Senegal international in the summer as retaliation.
However, Mane is understood to have shown remorse for his actions and Bayern’s punishment, as it stands, is no more than a temporary suspension.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Mane was not compelled to apologize to Sane or the rest of the team and was instead permitted to participate in team training on Thursday morning.
He is now banned from the team, though, and manager Thomas Tuchel plans to talk about the punishment during his news conference on Friday.
The defending Bundesliga champions must overcome a three-goal deficit at the Allianz Arena when they play Hoffenheim on Saturday before focusing on the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Manchester City. It is not yet known if Mane will play.
