    AS Roma confirm departure of Jose Mourinho as manager

    The departure of manager Jose Mourinho and his staff from AS Roma has been confirmed.

    Roma finished as runners-up to Sevilla in the Europa League last season, losing the final on penalties. Mourinho took over the team before the 2021–2022 season and guided them to triumph in the Europa Conference League during his first campaign.

    However, Roma has opted to part company with Mourinho following a miserable start to the 2023–24 season, which has placed them ninth in the Serie A league after 20 games. They confirmed his dismissal in a statement on Tuesday morning.

    The statement read: “AS Roma announces that Jose Mourinho and his technical collaborators will leave the Club with immediate effect.

    “Mourinho was announced as the sixtieth manager in Roma’s history in May 2021.

    “He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on 25 May 2022 and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.”

    Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin added: “We thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for the passion and commitment he has shown since his arrival in the Giallorossi.

    “We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the Club, immediate change is necessary.

    “We wish Jose and his collaborators the best for the future.”

    Less than a month after being fired by Tottenham Hotspur, Mourinho came to an agreement to join Roma in May 2021.

    Mourinho spent two and a half seasons at Manchester United before spending a year and a half with Spurs. During his first season, the team won three trophies, and the following year, he led them to a second-place Premier League finish.

    In his pomp, Mourinho won three Premier League championships during two stays with Chelsea, guided Porto to an unexpected Champions League success in 2004, returned to Europe with Inter, and defeated Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in La Liga with Real Madrid.
