Morravey named as the new Apple Music Africa Rising artist
Apple Music has just revealed the newest artist to be featured in its Africa Rising artist development program, and it’s none other than Afropop singer-songwriter Morravey. This recognition marks Morravey as the latest recipient of the Apple Music Africa Rising initiative.
“Feeling super blessed and thankful to have been chosen as the Africa Rising Artist for November,” she tells Apple Music. “I remember growing up and being inspired by other amazing women in music, to think that now I get a chance to inspire someone else, another young girl, is surreal. My upcoming debut project, The Ravi EP is very dear to me and I can’t wait for you all to hear it in Spatial Audio. Thank you for all the love!”
Morravey, who was born in Nigeria’s Rivers State, Port Harcourt, was impacted by the city and the music culture that permeates the area.
“Coming from Port Harcourt gives you a different kind of confidence, a different kind of vibe,” she tells Apple Music. “I write songs with the intent of inspiring people to feel all the feels—dance, love, motivation! Music is my way of connecting with people and in turn helping them connect with one another.”
Morravey’s musical journey began by using gospel songs as her canvas and infusing them with her unique twist, incorporating instrumentals from secular tracks.
During the lockdown, she took to sharing videos of herself performing cover songs, gradually growing her audience and catching the eye of prominent figures in the music industry. Notably, global Afrobeats superstar Davido was among those who recognized her talent.
In early 2023, Morravey inked a deal with Davido’s label, DMW, and made her debut on a track titled ‘In the Garden‘ from Davido’s ‘Timeless‘ album. This song quickly went viral, catapulting Morravey to overnight stardom as her social media following skyrocketed, with numerous new fans eagerly anticipating her own music.
Her highly anticipated debut release, ‘The Ravi‘ EP, is now available for streaming on Apple Music, and it’s presented in spatial audio. The EP comprises five tracks that showcase Morravey’s remarkable ability to seamlessly blend multiple genres, spanning from dance to reggae, highlife, and afropop. The EP’s centerpiece is the summery single ‘What Is Love.’
