‘We were very close to winning’ – Ancelotti disappointed with late draw at Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed his disappointment following his team’s 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in their recent La Liga clash.
Despite dominating large portions of the match, Real Madrid couldn’t maintain their lead and had to settle for a point.
“It is hard to cope with a draw in which we were very close to winning. It can happen; the opponents are very strong and have a lot of quality. Their goal was in the last minute; it’s a pity. We controlled the game well, and we came close,” Ancelotti stated.
Despite the late equalizer, Ancelotti remained optimistic about Real Madrid’s position in the league, noting, “I always like to think positively. We’ve won a point away from home, and we are a point closer to leaders Barcelona.”
The match was briefly halted due to objects being thrown onto the pitch by Atletico Madrid fans after Real Madrid took the lead.
Ancelotti commended referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer for his decision to pause the game until the situation was resolved, stating, “I don’t think it helped Atletico; it affected us both equally. We all wanted to play. The decision to stop the match was the right one. The referee mentioned that lighters were thrown, and he had to stop the match twice. If they threw another one, he had to suspend it.”
Real Madrid is set to travel to France on Wednesday for a UEFA Champions League match against Lille.
