Serena Williams Makes Surprise Return to Tennis at 44 for Queen’s Club Doubles Comeback

Tennis legend Serena Williams has officially confirmed her return to professional tennis at the age of 44, ending years of speculation about whether her time on the court was truly over.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is set to feature in the women’s doubles event at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London later this month, after receiving a wildcard entry into the tournament. Reports suggest she is expected to team up with rising Canadian talent Victoria Mboko.
Williams last competed professionally at the 2022 US Open, where she bowed out in an emotional third-round defeat to Ajla Tomljanović. While many interpreted that moment as her retirement, Williams had previously made it clear she was not fully stepping away from the sport, insisting she was simply “evolving away” from tennis rather than formally retiring.
Her return follows months of growing speculation, particularly after she re-entered the sport’s anti-doping testing pool in late 2025, a move that hinted at a possible comeback.
In a short social media teaser that sent fans into excitement, Williams posted the message “Good news travels fast,” further fueling anticipation ahead of her return to competition.
She later described Queen’s Club as the ideal setting for her comeback, pointing to her long-standing affection for grass courts—a surface where she enjoyed tremendous success, including seven Wimbledon singles titles.
For now, it remains unclear whether this return will remain strictly within doubles or eventually develop into a full singles comeback. Still, one thing is certain: one of tennis’s greatest-ever champions is officially back on court, and the sporting world will be watching closely.
