Sarina Wiegman Adds Burna Boy Twist to Ballon d’Or Speech, Afrobeats Star Responds

England women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman added a playful touch to the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris when she gave a surprise shoutout to Nigerian superstar Burna Boy during her acceptance speech.
After receiving the Women’s Coach of the Year award, Wiegman closed with a lighthearted quip: “If Burna Boy is around, maybe we could do a little bit of dancing too!” Her remark drew laughter from the audience and quickly set social media ablaze, merging football fandom with Afrobeats buzz.

Burna Boy was quick to join the fun, posting on X (formerly Twitter) later that night: “Haha, I’m up for it Sarina! A huge congrats to you and the team @Lionesses.” His response has since fueled speculation online about whether the lighthearted exchange could evolve into a memorable on-stage moment or even a creative collaboration.

The night capped a remarkable year for Wiegman and the Lionesses. Under her guidance, England lifted the Euro 2025 trophy in Switzerland, defeating Spain 3-1 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in extra time — her second continental title with the team after their historic Euro 2022 triumph.
The Lionesses also made a strong showing in the individual Ballon d’Or honours. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton collected the Women’s Yashin Trophy, while Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly, Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, and Hampton herself all ranked in the top 10 for Women’s Player of the Year. Arsenal capped off the evening by being named Women’s Club of the Year.
Now, with Burna Boy playfully “signed on,” fans are buzzing over the prospect of a crossover moment that could see the Grammy-winning Afrobeats icon share the spotlight with football’s most successful women’s coach.
