Skales Calls Out Nigerian Police for Alleged Harassment and Extortion Attempt
Nigerian singer and songwriter Skales has openly criticized the Nigerian Police Force after a tense encounter on December 4, 2024. Taking to social media platform X, the artist recounted an incident near Magodo in Lagos while en route to an interview at City FM.
In his post, Skales accused the police officers of pointing guns at him and his team “as if we were criminals” and then demanding “Christmas money.” When he refused, the situation allegedly escalated, with the officers threatening to delay and search his vehicle.
Skales wrote: “They said a lot of rubbish… that they would delay us and search us. I said my level of hatred for this joke called Nigerian Police Force will not let me want to ever be at your mercy.”
During the search, police found bundles of cash in the vehicle, which the singer claimed worsened their behavior.
“They started saying, ‘Okay, so you get money you no want give us; we go show you today.’”
Despite the threats, no incriminating items were found, and Skales and his team were eventually allowed to proceed.
In a fiery conclusion to his post, the artist expressed frustration over what he described as systemic corruption and incompetence within the Nigerian Police Force:
“Nigerian police, I will never respect those fools. Useless people, na only to stop Benz una sabi; when yawa gas, una go gbes… foolish idiots.”
The incident has sparked reactions online, with many echoing Skales‘ sentiments about the conduct of law enforcement in Nigeria. Calls for police reform remain a hot topic, as incidents of alleged harassment and extortion persist.
Nigerian police will not stop being a joke …so yesterday the Nigerian police under the bridge close to magodo as if you’re going to fela shrine/agidingbi stopped us on our way to city fm last night & displayed plenty madness of pointing guns at us as if we were criminals after…
