Ruben Amorim Defends Bruno Fernandes’ New Midfield Role After Bodo/Glimt Victory
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defended his decision to deploy Bruno Fernandes in a deeper midfield role during Thursday’s narrow 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt.
The Portugal international, known for his attacking prowess, was tested in an unfamiliar position as part of a midfield pivot.
Fernandes’ adjustment allowed Mason Mount to take on a more advanced role, a tactical choice that surprised fans and raised questions about Amorim’s strategy.
Speaking after the match, Amorim justified his approach, praising Fernandes for his ability to control the game’s tempo.
“He’s the most experienced player,” Amorim explained. “He’s the right player to dictate the tempo. Mason Mount was always with his back to goal, which is difficult, and Bruno is better with the goal in front of him.”
Despite Amorim’s confidence in Fernandes’ capabilities, the defensive experiment had its flaws. Lining up alongside the more defensively inclined Manuel Ugarte, Fernandes’ positional awareness was criticized, particularly after his misstep contributed to Bodo/Glimt’s opening goal.
As United prepare for a Premier League clash against Everton on Sunday, Amorim faces a crucial decision—whether to continue with Fernandes in the deeper role or revert to a more conventional setup.
The tactical gamble highlights Amorim’s willingness to explore new dynamics within his squad, but its long-term success may depend on finding the right balance between Fernandes’ attacking instincts and defensive responsibilities.
