Nigerian rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has clarified the reason behind his decision to study law, dispelling common misconceptions.

In an interview on the With Chude podcast hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Falz shared that his choice to pursue law was motivated by the impactful work of his father, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana.

Falz explained that growing up, he was inspired by the many stories he heard about how his father had helped people in need. “Everyone sort of had a story about how my dad came to their aid at some point in time and how he fought for them and was there for them.

At that time it was me taking everything in, like, ‘this is something’. So at that point in time, I wasn’t pressured; I aspired to emulate what he was doing,” he added.

Although he briefly practiced law—working at the Ministry of Justice during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and later at his father’s law firm—Falz ultimately decided to focus on his music career.”  I did practice law for a short period of time. Very short, almost two years.

I worked at the Ministry of Justice during my youth service, which was like 2012 or so, then in 2013 I was at my father’s firm and 2014 was when things started to pick up for me so I started going out of practice,” he added in between laughter.

Falz’s comments offer insight into his genuine interest in law, shaped by his father’s inspiring legacy, and explain his shift toward music despite his legal background.
