Davido performs as Ethiopia enters 2017
Nigerian music sensation Davido recently had the unique opportunity to perform in Ethiopia, celebrating the country’s New Year, which marks the beginning of the year 2017 on their calendar.
Yes, you read that correctly—2017! Ethiopia follows a calendar that is approximately 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar used by most of the world.
Davido’s performance in Ethiopia was part of the New Year festivities, and his associate, Ubi Franklin, took to social media to explain the Ethiopian calendar. In an Instagram story, Ubi shared a clip saying, “It’s New Year in Ethiopia; they are in 2017. They just entered 2017.”
This cultural experience allowed Davido to connect with the Ethiopian people and their unique traditions, marking a special moment in his career. As the rest of the world prepares to welcome 2024, Ethiopia is just starting 2017!

In other news, Davido and Lojay have been recognized by Billboard for their chart-topping success, as both artists were recently named to the publication’s 2024 Honor Roll.
This recognition highlights the growing global influence of Afrobeats, particularly in the U.S., where Nigerian artists have achieved notable success on various *Billboard* charts.
Davido and Lojay were honored for their contributions to chart-topping records on the R&B and hip-hop charts between August 1, 2023, and July 31, 2024.
Their inclusion in the 2024 Billboard Honor Roll comes from Davido’s involvement in Chris Brown’s track “Sensational,” which hit No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay Chart.
