However, there have been some music videos that have managed to take our focus from the song to the content of the videos itself. Leaving us going wow at its contents.

Artists know that the important way of getting streams doesn’t just fall on the song itself but what the video contains.

So here are the Nigerian Music videos that broke the internet with its content.

    Simi- Duduke(2020)

When Simi released “Duduke” as her first single for 2020, it was taken as just another amazing song from Simi until she dropped the Music Video.

The sensational singer dropped the music video in the month of April to celebrate her birthday, fans didn’t know they were in for a treat.

Apparently the singer had made the song to celebrate her then-unborn child and share how she was feeling after knowing she was going to be a mother.

The song had more than a million views within a few days of release and the internet went crazy as congratulations trooped in for both Simi and her Adekunle Gold.

The song even led to a challenge called the “Duduke Challenge” in which Pregnant women would dance to the song while caressing their bumps.

    Falz – This is Nigeria(2018)

Falz calls on Nigerian Government to open up the Entertainment Industry
    Falz

Falz knows how to pass his message through his music. He is never afraid to say his mind no matter the topic he is talking about. He is rarely found involved in any controversy until he released “This is Nigeria” in 2018.

The song was inspired by American rapper, Childish Gambino’s This is America. While Childish Gambino took the path of using metaphors and abstract art to pass his message, Falz was direct with his message.

The music video broke the internet with its strong political message that it was banned by the NBC for supposedly having Vulgar language.

Falz was called out by The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) for having girls dressed in hijabs dance. He was also called out by indigenes in the North for showing a scene where a Fulani man takes a cutlass to behead a man tied.

The video had a lot of controversial scenes that speak to the issues affecting Nigeria as a nation. Like the corruption plaguing the nation, Religious extremism, Police brutality amongst others.

    Wizkid- Fever(2018)

    Wizkid

In 2018, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage had got people talking about their unusual friendship. Videos and pictures surfacing online did nothing but fuel the rumors that they were dating despite no confirmation from both artists.

Wizkid decided to take advantage of the curiosity and used Tiwa as a video vixen in the music video for “Fever”. This broke the internet. Streaming numbers for both the video and the audio went through the roof thanks to this strategy.

Despite some fans knowing this was merely a strategy more than a real relationship, this didn’t spare Tiwa from being criticized for hanging out a man who she was older than. She was called all sorts of names because of the video.

    Davido- Blow My Mind(2019)

Why I left rap to do African Music - Davido
    Davido

Having an international collaboration on a song wasn’t new to Davido as he has had Meek Mill, Young Thug, Rae Sremmurnd on different songs.

However when he collaborated with Chris Brown for “Blow My Mind”, it was a different ball game. This caused him to be under a lot of watchful eyes for a lot of reasons, one of which was that “Brown Skin Girl” by Beyonce featuring Wizkid was released earlier that year.

Wizkid’s fans accused Davido of trying to chase clout because he wasn’t invited on the Lion King soundtrack album.

The song eventually dropped and it was an instant hit even overshadowing “Brown Skin Girl” at some point.

When Davido announced that he would be releasing the Music video, he was dragged as trolls claimed that they were sure Chris Brown won’t be on the Video. Davido’s fans on the hand clapped back that their fave always delivered, unlike Wizkid who couldn’t get Drake to appear on his “Come Closer” music videos.

True to their words, Davido dropped the video and Chris Brown was in the Video. The video broke a record on Youtube that year to have the highest views within a few hours of release for a Nigerian video.

    Olamide – Wo(2017)

Olamide reveals he's done working on his album
    Olamide

Before Naira Marley, Olamide was the rebel child of the Music Industry. His songs were always found to contain strong and vulgar language. His Music Videos did not fare any better, “Wo” topped the list. The video for the song had a lot of scenes showing people smoking and taking drugs.

It didn’t help that the video showed barely clad women dancing on the street. Olamide was slammed for promoting drugs and nudity with his songs and videos. An outcry led to the NBC banning both the song and the video.
