What if Burna Boy fails to bring home a Grammy, Despite his “African Giant” album nomination.
Grammy Awards Formerly Gramophone Awards is an award presented by The Recording Academy to recognize achievements in the world music industry.
This award is no doubt one of the biggest and hardest to win, since over 62 years of establishment.
Several top artists from all over the world have been nominated countless times, but only a few were able to bag a Grammy before the end of their career.
As a matter of fact, only one Nigerian has recorded a solo win in the name of; Sikiru Adepoju.
Though, that was quite a long time ago when the music market wasn’t so cramped.
Now, winning has become more difficult, as many new talents have risen. The competition has become very Fierce, that only the best among equals is opportune to win.
Before Burna Boy’s Massive arrival, lots of top current music acts were nominated for this prestigious award, but none were been able to win.
Talk about king sunny Ade, Babajide Olatunji, Timaya, and sons of the late Afrobeats legend(Fela Kuti); Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti
Nonetheless, 2019, marked quite an Adrenaline rush for Burna Boy‘s career.
He went from releasing billboard smashing hits to bagging almost all African music and entertainment awards held this year, including the BET and EMAs.
The singer made several international collaborations and entertained thousands of global fans in concert.
He dropped a mega Album; “African giant”, which took him places, brought him trophies and caused even the biggest media houses and Newspaper houses to address him as “The graceful king of Afrobeats.
Finally, the African giant earned a Grammy nomination, for his album, under the “Best World Music album category”.
However, Burna Boy’s come up might be just too soon, for such a highly esteemed award.
To buttress my point, let’s look at the greatest American rappers and singers of all time, known all over the world. Yes, quite a number of them got nominated, but only a few have a Grammy attached to their awards list.
Talk about the popularly acclaimed Queen of rap; Nicki Minaj, ten nominations, no award. Katy Perry, thirteen nominations, no award. Even the great reggae king, Bob Marley, only got nominated once and didn’t win. Rap legend, Snoop Dog, Seventeen nominations, Zero awards.
Let’s not even go too far, Seun Kuti has been nominated a total of four times, with absolutely no win. He was nominated once under; “Best Contemporary Music Album”, and thrice under “Best World Music Album“, the same category under which Burna Boy was nominated.
Even though it’s best to remain optimistic this time around, we can’t deny the fact that he has relatively slim chances of winning.
Anyhow, nothing is impossible. Perhaps he could pave the way for other Nigerian artists by being the First publicized Nigerian to Win a Grammy.
Hmm, now that sounds really good!
Once again, congrats on your nomination Burna Boy!
We pray you to win and become the giant that rocketed African music to the world!.
On this note, I will like to urge Nigerians to maintain their calm in whatever the result turns out to be.
As Burna Boy still remains the African Giant, even Grammy can never rob him of his shine!!!
