Mayorkun is a talent, and at some point, I start wondering if we’ve even felt his heat at all.
No doubt, he’s still fresh and even though his ‘Next Rated’ days are over, he’s still one of the guys who got the sauce. That is something we all know for a fact!
But this year has been really silent for all the DMW boys, including OBO himself, Davido and others. They’ve not really done much, nothing from their camp. The last time they did a joint was “On God” and before then, it’s been a long time. Mayorkun, though, what’s up with him?
Last year, he proved himself to be a pop star potential when he dropped his first body of work, “The Mayor of Lagos.” And although between that time and now is a mighty long time and a lot of things have happened since then, it still remains his most credible work, to date.
He kicked off the year with “Hustler’s Anthem”, the freestyle that quickly tore IG apart, and thrust him back into the mainstream. That worked well, as a form of hype. But after that, it’s been nothing. He appeared on the DMW collective, “On God” and has been featured by a couple of guys. Lil Kesh put him on “Nkan Be”, and he scored a major hit with Kizz Daniel on “True.” Shizzi featured him on “Aye Kan” and Oladips did “Places” with him. Most recent of all is next rated nominee, Joeboy, who featured the ‘Eleko’ hitmaker on “Don’t Call Me Back.”
He’s in high demand, another fact. And he certainly still has a lot of vibes in him, because he hasn’t disappointed us on every occasion. Perhaps, there is a reason he’s been on a low as of late? Maybe he wants to get married, or become a dad, or retire? Hm, no, those are far-fetched. What if he’s just gearing for his next album? Now that makes sense.
Days ago, he released a new song “Up To Something”, his first solo in a while and it’s all shades of pure vibes, the kind of vibe an artist like Mayorkun would definitely put on an album. And judging from the content of his previous work, “Up To Something” seems like the perfect jam to start the ‘album’ campaign. Doesn’t it?
I mean, it’s Mayorkun, but he’s not doing a proper love song like “Mama” back in the day. This is a more introspective (for lack of a better word) tune, with Mayorkun playing the “you’re beautiful just the way you are” card. It’s got hit potential and could easily be big this festive season.
After all this time away, it better be a new album. Really. But, he’s definitely up to something!
