We anticipated for weeks, and finally, the Video for Olamide’s hit, “Science Student“ is here. If you haven’t seen it, you don’t know what you’re missing. And, yeah, once again I doff my hat for Unlimited L.A (does that mean Los Angeles?)
This Science Student’s Video is the best (or say the most artistic) video I’ve seen since Dipp‘s “Pop Off Selecta,” in 2010. And, does that mark the era, when rap star, Olamide rides majestically into the artistic realm, on every project he embarks on? Whether video, or just a freestyle, or a live show? Your guess is as good as mine.
Once I saw the artwork for the Audio, I knew, yes, this was something cool. The song itself, is a hell of an artistic work, with symbolism and imagery, in place. The beat ain’t bad, too! And, the only missing part of the puzzle is the Video – that was until it dropped, about a week ago.
The song got banned from terrestrial radio, just ’cause of the lyrics which made an attempt to “satirize” the act of taking (and mixing) hard drugs to get high. It was too explicit, for their liking. BUT, wait, what should the Video look like? Smoking, mixing of substances and all that? That was gonn’ get banned absolutely. Or just End the campaign at the audio? That’s garbage. So, if Olamide was to push his message forward (and make some more dough) he better played on the safe side.
BUT instead of staying below, Baddo took it two steps higher. That’s why a lot of people won’t understand what this is all about. Science Student’s Video is one that should never get banned. At least, not until the message has been passed across. Moreover, a ban from TV won’t be a good start for “shaku shaku” in the mainstream. So, instead of going to the streets for the Video, he went to creatives, Unlimited LA et Kaffy. And, then they formed a sharp concept (it was ambiguous tho), that looked crazy, but passed the message, properly, without having to cross boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. That’s basically what the masterpiece is all about.
The length, which can actually scare TV’s, sit at over 07mins, and a good part of that was set apart to showcase the “shaku shaku” dance. The audio, was also altered at the end, a little, to make it fit. To enjoy the Video, however you need to have a good knowledge of the song, cause it’s easy to get carried away looking for a “story line.” The costumes are also good stuffs, reflecting very high aesthetic sense of the African culture.
Leave the bullshits for the dogs. Forget the high school musical citing, or Chris Brown‘s video sh*t or stealing of Beyonce’s costumes, only few Nigerian artists have done something that’s this dope. You were expecting street Video, that’ll get banned the day it’s released? Don’t forget Olamide’s not only a Bariga boy, he’s also a rap star, and he caters for a big fan base, home and abroad. And this ain’t even about Olamide!
Seriously, the Video’s hot, and yeah, this should be Olamide’s best visuals, so far. And we have the Views to show for it. Kudos!
