Nigeria’s president used my song as ringtone – Davido
Afrobeat superstar Davido revealed in an interview with American pop star and talk show host Kelly Clarkson that one of his songs was used as a ringtone by the president of Nigeria.
While he didn’t specify which song or mention the president’s name, he shared this interesting tidbit during the conversation.
“I had a song that was like top 20 on the charts in Africa, but then the next song I made went to number one. The president of the country, my song was his ringtone,” Davido said.
Davido, the head of DMW, shared insights into his early career and the challenges he faced due to a mutual agreement with his father, Mr. Adedeji Adeleke, regarding his education. He revealed that his father was initially angry with him for breaking their agreement and entering the music industry, to the point where he used his influence to cancel some of Davido’s shows.
Speaking about his career growth and the obstacles he encountered, the “Fem” singer explained that his billionaire father had a strong desire for him to complete his education before pursuing music. However, Davido’s rapid rise to fame complicated the situation.
Davido said, “I come from a family that places great importance on education. I’m the first generation in my entire bloodline to venture into entertainment. My father was very insistent on me finishing school. He didn’t mind me pursuing music, but he was adamant that I complete my education. He even owns a university, so you can imagine. My mom was a college professor, too. I think they were also concerned because, whatever you want your children to do, you want them to succeed in it. Success in our industry is not easy to achieve.”
Davido went on to explain that they reached a compromise where he attended school for two weeks each month and spent the other two weeks in the studio pursuing his music. However, as his music career gained momentum and he became a distraction in class, he was allowed to take part-time classes.
His growing popularity led to issues, as his father had the power to influence his shows, causing cancellations.
Eventually, he did complete his education, and now his father is one of his biggest supporters. This journey highlights the challenges and negotiations he faced in balancing his education with his burgeoning music career.
