Nigerian singer Kingsley Okorie, one-half of the renowned Nigerian highlife band The Cavemen, has openly discussed his fascinating journey and the reasons why he decided to pursue music instead of law.

Kingsley revealed the crucial choice he took to pursue a professional music career despite being a licensed attorney.

According to him, music has always been the core of his interest. After graduating from law school, he took the determined decision to pursue a professional music career with his brother, Benjamin, rather than pursue a career in law.

This was revealed during their visit on the most recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show, where they had an honest talk with Benjamin James, his brother and fellow band member.

Benjamin, in presenting his own unusual path, highlighted how he avoided standard university education in favor of attending a specialist music school.

Reflecting on Kingsley’s journey, he recounted, “He [Kingsley] went to the university, I opted not to. Instead, I enrolled in a dedicated music school and immersed myself in the world of music for two years. Eventually, our paths converged once again, bringing us together.”

Kingsley further elaborated on the thought process that led to the band’s distinctive name, The Cavemen. He recalled, “Following my time in law school, I returned home and shared with my brother, ‘During my civil litigation class, I had a moment of introspection. Being in Kano, far removed from the bustling music scenes of Lagos and Abuja, it felt as though I was in a secluded cave – a true caveman.’ My brother resonated with the idea, and that’s how the name was born.”

Benjamin added a unique perspective to the narrative, explaining, “From the tender age of 2, I found myself drawn to playing the drums. Despite facing challenges, such as failing the WEAC examination, I mustered the courage to express my desire to attend a music school. Thankfully, my mother supported my decision wholeheartedly. With Kingsley, our firstborn, steadfastly pursuing his legal career, there was no undue pressure on me. This freedom allowed me to wholeheartedly pursue my passion, which has now become our means of providing for the family.”
