Wole Soyinka claims Davido does not owe an apology to Muslims

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has spoken out in defense of the award-winning singer, Davido, who faced criticism from some Muslims for promoting a music video deemed disrespectful to their religion.

The literary icon supported Davido by referencing a viral video of aggrieved youths in Maiduguri protesting against the music video.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Soyinka argued that Davido should not apologize to the protestors. He pointed out how the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, had made derogatory comments against Christians in the past but was not asked to apologize.

He said, “There was nothing to apologize about, and that applied equally to El Rufai’s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I equally absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido on behalf of the Moslem community.”

“It wasn’t Davido’s music that lynched Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was killed by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over alleged blasphemy,” he added.

Recall that Davido has been placed under fire over a music video released by his signee, Logos Olori.
Soyinka’s statement offers his perspective on the situation and supports Davido’s right to artistic expression without having to apologize for the video.
