Wizkid’s ‘Morayo’ sets new African streaming record on Spotify
Nigerian music icon Wizkid continues to cement his legacy as one of Africa’s most accomplished artists with his latest album, ‘Morayo,’ which has set groundbreaking records on Spotify.
Released on November 22, 2024, the album became the highest-streamed African album during its opening week on the platform, amassing an astonishing 42 million streams in just seven days.
‘Morayo,’ a 16-track body of work, features collaborations with Asake, Brent Faiyaz, Tiakola, Anais Cardot, and Jasmine Sullivan. The album has been celebrated as a testament to Wizkid’s musical prowess and ability to craft globally appealing Afrobeat sounds.
The project’s achievements include surpassing the previous record held by Tyla’s ‘Water‘ for the highest opening week streams for an African album.
Impressively, ‘Morayo‘ achieved this feat within five days of release. It also set the record for the biggest opening day streams for an African album, with all 16 tracks surpassing 500,000 streams within the first 24 hours.
Fans have praised ‘Morayo‘ as a comprehensive showcase of Wizkid’s evolution over a career spanning more than a decade. Many have highlighted its blend of Afrobeat excellence and international appeal.
However, some critics argue that the album leans heavily on familiar sounds while lacking thematic depth and lyrical innovation.
The album marks Wizkid’s sixth LP and eighth overall project. Its success reinforces its reputation as a global music powerhouse, with a consistent streak of hit singles and landmark achievements.
‘Morayo‘ continues to dominate streaming platforms and garner acclaim, further solidifying Wizkid’s position as one of Africa’s leading cultural exports.
