On August 31, 2021, Nigerian musician Wizkid’s trailblazing single ‘Essence,’ featuring Tems, became the most sought song on music search site Shazam.
Outside of the country, ‘Essence’ continues to do well. In the United States, the song has become the most shazam(ed).
Shazam via their official Twitter account wrote:
“Big congrats to @wizkidayo!! #Essence is now the most Shazamed song in the United States.”

Wizkid’s initial release featured music counterpart Tems. He went on to remix the song with Justin Bieber.
Nigerians have been buzzing about this achievement. He has also earned international acclaim.
This comes after Wizkid’s acclaimed Justin Bieber-assisted remix, which debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, became the first Nigerian single to rank in the top 20. The song climbed 28 positions from 44 to achieve this feat.
Wizkid’s “Essence” becomes the second African song to reach a Shazam milestone in less than a year.
Master KG’s “Jerusalema” became the most Shazamed song in the world in Q4 2020.
