Big Wiz joins Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy & Rema in making Spotify history.

Global Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has achieved a major milestone as his critically acclaimed album Made In Lagos surpasses 1 billion streams on Spotify, making him one of the few African artists to reach this historic benchmark with a single project.
Released in October 2020 and later reissued as a deluxe version in August 2021, Made In Lagos has steadily grown into a global phenomenon.
The album’s massive success is largely driven by the international smash hit “Essence,” featuring Tems, and its remix with Justin Bieber, which alone accounts for over 400 million streams.
The project, which seamlessly blends Afrobeats, R&B, and pop, features an all-star lineup that includes Burna Boy, H.E.R., Skepta, Damian Marley, BNXN (formerly Buju), Tay Iwar, Projexx, and Terri. It has been praised for its sonic richness, cross-cultural appeal, and cohesive production.
The Made In Lagos era has been decorated with numerous awards, certifications, and international recognition, firmly establishing the album as one of the greatest Nigerian albums of the 21st century.

The success of “Essence” was particularly pivotal—it not only earned Wizkid a Grammy nomination but also helped push Afrobeats into mainstream global consciousness, opening international doors for many Nigerian artists.
By joining the 1 billion club, Made In Lagos sits alongside elite Nigerian albums such as Rema’s Rave & Roses, Burna Boy’s Love, Damini, Omah Lay’s Boy Alone, and Ayra Starr’s The Year I Turned 21—each of which has reached the billion-stream mark on Spotify.
This milestone further solidifies Wizkid’s place among the greatest and most influential artists in African music history, with a career spanning over a decade of groundbreaking contributions to Afrobeats and global music.
Since Made In Lagos, Wizkid has released several notable projects including More Love, Less Ego, the Soundman Vol. 2 EP, and most recently his sixth studio album, Morayo, continuing his trend of blending introspection with sonic innovation.
Wizkid’s legacy continues to shine as a beacon of global excellence in music—a true icon of African artistry.
