Former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has reportedly explained his decision to resign from his role with the national team.
Renowned Nigerian sports journalist Colin Udoh explained on his Instagram live story why Finidi George left his position. According to Udoh, the former Enyimba coach submitted his resignation letter after learning that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had decided to appoint a technical adviser without involving him in the decision.
Finidi stated that the NFF and he had a meeting to discuss the poor performance in the two World Cup qualifying games against Benin Republic and South Africa. However, he was not informed about the decision to appoint a foreign technical adviser until he read about it online. After waiting for two days without any communication from the NFF, he decided to submit his resignation letter.
This resignation means the NFF must urgently find a new coach for the Super Eagles before the next round of qualifying games for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
The 53-year-old Finidi George was appointed last month (May 2024) ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic. Currently, Nigeria is fifth in the group, with three points behind Zimbabwe, which holds the last position.
