Why Burna Boy, Angelique Kidjo and Fela Cannot Be Classified As Artistes – Bella Shmurda
Nigerian singer, Bella Shmurda stated why he would not classify music heavyweights, Burna Boy, Angelique Kidjo and Fela Kuti as artistes.
In an interview with media personality, Adesope, the singer exclaimed that singing is different from music and that the qualifications for being an artiste are different from that of a musician.
He emphasizes that being a musician transcends mere singing; it involves crafting a distinctive sound, staying authentic, and actively contributing to the evolution of music.
The core lesson here is not just about chasing fleeting trends for temporary attention, but about aspiring to become a trailblazer and a legend in the industry. The focus is on embracing the artistry and substance of the musical journey.
His insight encourages individuals to strive for enduring impact and longevity in their chosen fields. It underscores the significance of being sincere and original in the pursuit of creativity, advocating for a commitment to one’s unique voice and a dedication to contributing meaningfully to the ongoing evolution of the art.
In his words, “Fela is a musician, Wasiu Ayinde is a musician, Burna Boy is a musician, he is not an artiste. Angelique Kidjo is a musician, she is not an artiste. So, Bella Shmurda is a musician, he is not an aritste…. Artiste is just someone that is known for singing, he is not someone that is known for doing music…”
