As the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo gets ready to begin his World Cup, former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has fired another jab at him after Lionel Messi’s question.

Rising tensions between the former players led to Ronaldo attacking the DC United management in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Rooney was called a “rat” by Ronaldo, who also suggested that he was pursuing Instagram followers for his comments on the Portugal international.

Rooney ended his silence during the interview and responded to the 37-year-old’s comment.  Before stating that he thought Lionel Messi was the superior of the two footballing superstars, he called Ronaldo’s comments “weird.”

He said: “Everyone has different views on Messi and Ronaldo but I have said many times that I think Messi is the best. I have watched lots of videos of Diego Maradona, who was a similar player, but Messi is better.

“He has everything — the way he controls games, his dribbling, his assists — whereas Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer. It would be a great story for football if either Messi or Ronaldo won the World Cup.

“I have heard some of the Argentine players saying that they want to win it for Messi. That’s crazy — and might only increase the pressure on them.”

Rooney was once more questioned about Ronaldo’s interview during an appearance on the Indian TV network JioCinema ahead of the World Cup beginning with Qatar’s 2-0 loss to Ecuador on Sunday.

He was asked who out of Messi, Ronaldo and Harry Kane would get into his all-time team and Rooney elected to leave out the Portuguese icon. “I’d have to start Messi, bench Kane and leave Ronaldo out,” the 37-year-old replied.

Ronaldo will attempt to have an impression on what is likely to be his final World Cup, despite the fact that he is unlikely to play for United again and the club is already considering cancelling the remaining terms of his contract.

On Thursday, before contests with Uruguay and South Korea, Portugal’s Group H campaign gets underway against Ghana.

Meanwhile, Messi wants to end his international career on a high note by winning the World Cup. Before facing Mexico and Poland, Argentina launches its most recent effort to seize it against Saudi Arabia.
