Victony shares why he switched from rap to Afrobeats
Victony, the talented Nigerian singer-songwriter, recently revealed that he made the switch from hip-hop to Afrobeats as he wanted to explore and experiment with something new in his music.
The 22-year-old artist credited the pandemic quarantine for giving him the chance to discover and reinvent himself creatively. Victony was featured alongside BNXN and Ayra Starr in Teen Vogue’s Africa’s New Wave cover story, showcasing emerging talents in the African music scene.
“The aura, the feeling during lockdown was very different, and that prompted me to want to try something new,” the ‘Soweto’ crooner recalled.
“But when I got into the Afrobeat space, I realized that it was even harder because a key element of Afrobeat is relatability. [But you have to do that] and still make sense. You still have to be metaphoric, you still have to be creative with the writing,” he added.
Victony shared that during the challenging time when he was confined to a wheelchair for about a year after a tragic car accident that took the life of one of his friends, music played a crucial role in his healing process.
Meanwhile, the positive response he received for his collaboration with Mayorkun on the track ‘Holy Father’ while he was still in a wheelchair inspired and motivated him to push forward with his music project and build on that success. Music became an essential source of strength and determination for him during that difficult period.
