‘I used to think singing was for weak people’ – Singer, Victony
Nigerian singer Anthony Victor, widely known as Victony, has disclosed the reason behind his initial choice to pursue a career as a rapper instead of a singer, despite being aware of his singing talent.
He explained that, at the time, he perceived singing as an avenue for “weak people” and was drawn to the perceived strength and resilience associated with rapping.
The ‘Soweto‘ artist shared his transition from the rap genre to singing in 2020, marking a significant shift in his musical journey. In a recent episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Victony revealed that “Soweto” was among his early attempts at exploring the Afrobeats genre during this transformative period in his career.
He said, “Honestly, I used to know I could sing but I just refused to. Because I just felt like it was for weak people. I felt like it was an escape for weak people.
“I always loved that rapper energy and I wanted to be a rapper. But when I started singing, I realised that it is just as technical as rapping.”
