Singer Ayra Starr says that Nigeria and the UK are similar
Ayra Starr shared insights during a recent interview with Capital Xtra, highlighting her perspectives on cultural similarities between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. She discussed her experiences touring with Chris Brown, the release of her latest album, “The Year I Turned 21,” and her travels.
When asked about cultural shocks in the UK compared to the US, Ayra noted that British food, particularly traditional dishes like jellied foods, stood out. She emphasized that despite nuances, she finds the UK somewhat akin to Nigeria culturally.
The host asked, “You said that in the US, the biggest culture you’ve experienced is the food portion size. What is the biggest culture shock in the UK?”
Ayra Starr replied, “I feel like the UK is very similar to Nigeria, so the culture is not as different, but I think it’s the food. The UK food, not Chinese, Nigerian, or Italian food, is British food. There was one food that I had that was jellied.”

Reflecting on music, Ayra expressed admiration for songs like Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” and SZA’s “Snooze” and the entire “CTRL” album, wishing she had written them herself.
In a lighthearted moment, Ayra Starr revealed her unexpected talent for falling asleep anywhere, including standing up or even in a pool.
Recalling a touching fan interaction, she recounted receiving a handmade bracelet from a fan at a recent tour stop, a gesture that deeply resonated as the fan connected emotionally with Ayra’s music.
“Oh, I have so many. Two weeks ago at the arena on tour, a fan gave me a bracelet that she made for me because the last heartbreak song is her song because she just broke up with her boyfriend and we started crying together,” she narrated.
Finally, Ayra Starr shared her dream of relocating to New York City if she were to move to another country, reflecting her global aspirations in the music industry.
