Tyla opens up about her debut album and collaborations on it
South African Grammy Award winner Tyla recently discussed her latest album and the collaborative process behind it.
Tyla, the Grammy Award-winning artist, unveiled her debut album, “TYLA,” on March 22, 2024, to widespread acclaim. Fans have lauded it as Album of the Year, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Notably, she made history as the first African artist to break into the top 10 of the USA iTunes chart in 2024, with her album peaking at number 6.
In a recent interview, Tyla revealed that initially, she hadn’t planned to feature any collaborations on her debut album.
However, as the creative process unfolded, collaborations naturally emerged. She also discussed the challenging task of selecting tracks for the album, condensing the selection from 330 songs down to 14 final tracks.
This meticulous curation ensured that each song on the album was a standout piece, reflecting her artistic vision and musical evolution.
Tyla said, “We literally worked three years on this. A hundred and thirty songs narrowed down and it’s basically me introducing myself to the world. Initially, I wasn’t going to have features but they just started coming naturally. I was in a studio session mixing the album and Becky G was next door. I called her over. She listened to On My Body. She loved it and recorded her verse. With Tems I was supposed to submit the album. The next day she sent me a song”.
Tyla speaks on the making of her debut album and how the collaboration with Tems, Becky G and the other featured artists came together. ✨
