‘I’m trying to be the one that opens the door’ – Tyla
Tyla is poised to shine on the global music stage in 2023, following the success of her hit song “Water,” which has earned her a Grammy nomination. The African musician has proven to be a powerhouse of talent, gracefully navigating the music industry with authenticity and charisma.
In an interview with Rolling Stone’s The Breakdown, Tyla shared insights into her music-making process, emphasizing her love for listening to beats, singing spontaneously, and selecting what fits best. She expressed a preference for songs that evoke emotions rather than ones with direct and factual lyrics.
Her hit track “Water,” which blends pop, R&B, and South Africa’s amapiano, gained popularity on TikTok with the #tylawaterchallenge showcasing Tyla’s choreography. Despite the seeming premeditation, Tyla revealed that she simply wanted to create a summer anthem that everyone could vibe to and have fun with.
Addressing the significance of representing South Africa on the global stage, Tyla expressed her childhood desire to see a pop star from her home country alongside the likes of Rihanna, Britney Spears, and Michael Jackson.
She acknowledged the lack of representation during her upbringing but affirmed her determination to be the one to open doors for aspiring artists in South Africa. Tyla is driven to become the figure she wished to see when she was younger, aiming to be the one who paves the way for others in the industry.
