Nigerian Artists blessed fans with the best songs the industry has to offer in 2020 despite the Coronavirus pandemic and the global lockdown.
While the usual popular kings of the industry released hit songs that dominated airwaves, it was the fast-rising stars that entertained fans more.
This set of fresh talents became the rave of the moment breaking boundaries despite the obstacles that 2020 came with.

Ajebo Hustlers- Barawo
Ajebo Hustlers are a music group made of talented duos, Knowledge, and Piego. Though the two have been doing music for a while, “Barawo” was their breakout song.
The socially conscious song which talks about the extrajudicial killings in Africa, corruption, and the unavoidable tragedy these vices create in Nigeria is produced by the multi-talented music producer/singer, 1da Banton.
“Barawo” is means ‘Thief’ in Hausa. Ajebo Hustlers dedicated the song to the infamous ALUU 4 who were unjustly killed due to a false accusation.
Cheque- Zoom
Cheque got signed to Phyno‘s Penthauze music in 2019 and in 2020 released “Razor EP”. One song in particular which caught people’s attention was “Zoom”. The Emo/Cloud-trap style of music is a melodious tune that gets one bopping to it.
Olakira- Masarati
Olakira dropped an EP titled “Wakanda Jollof” in the beginning of 2020 but it wasn’t he released “Masarati” that he began to amass streams.
The popularity of “Masarati” was a slow build as it didn’t take off immediately but as more promotion began to be done on the song, it didn’t take too long for people to join the viral dance challenge for the song.
Jamopyper ft Mayorkun- If No Be You
Zanku Record act, Jamopyper enlists Mayorkun for the melodious “If No Be You” song. The harmony between the two gives the vibe-filled song more life.
Zinoleesky- Mapariwo
Zinoleesky went from being a viral freestyle singer to a member of Marlian Music in 2020. He dropped ‘Caro’ featuring his boss, Naira Marley which was a hit but his second single, “Mapariwo” was the golden goose.
Sang in mostly Yoruba, Zinoleesky tells his love interest that he would love to be intimate with her on the condition it remains a secret.

Bad Boy Timz- MJ
Bad Boy Timz had people singing along to his mid-tempo song titled “MJ” which is the initials of Micheal Jackson. He decided to enlist Mayorkun and Teni for two different remixes though Mayorkun’s version is the official remix.
Tems- Damages
The rebel queen, Tems dropped an EP titled “For Broken Ears” in 2020. But before the EP was released, she had dropped the lead single, “Damages”.
Produced by Spax, the song is a freedom anthem for girls who had their heartbroken. In the song, Tems reveals that she won’t be held back by the damages heartbreak has dealt to her.
Oxlade- Away
Oxlade stole hearts with his impressive vocals on “Away”. The Spax-produced love song was the lead single off his “Oxygene” EP.
The song was even Acknowledged by Drake and was featured on Rolling Stones’ best songs of 2020.
Bella Shmurda ft Zlatan, Lincoln- Cash App
One of 2020’s biggest winners was Bella Shmurda. After the success of his hit song, “Vision 2020”, he went to release ‘High Tension’ Ep, feature on Olamide and Davido‘s albums.
Like that wasn’t enough, he dropped one of the best street anthems of 2020 which he titled “Cash App”. The song has been compared to Chinko Ekun’s 2018 hit, “Able God” in terms of its impact, message, and commercial success.

Omah Lay- Bad Influence
Omah Lay was the phenomenon that people didn’t know they needed. After popping up on people’s radar with “You”, the talented singer dropped the “Get Layd” EP which birthed ‘Bad Influence’.
“Bad Influence” for some reason became fans favorite and has amassed a massive number of streams since its release.
