Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has revisited one of the darkest moments of her career, speaking candidly about the backlash that followed the leak of her private video in 2021.

In a new interview with Hot 97, the award-winning singer revealed the depth of trauma she endured when the clip surfaced online, not only because of the betrayal of trust but also because of the way the public turned against her.

“I was bashed for that video… A lot of people think that I was just trying to get sympathy. Not just regular people, people with platforms were quite horrible and blamed me,” she recalled.

According to Tiwa, many ignored the fact that she was a victim of a crime. Instead, she was accused of chasing clout and shamed relentlessly.

“I don’t know how they couldn’t see that I was a victim in this. People said I was doing it to be relevant. If I were doing that, I’d have used better lighting, lingerie, and my facial expressions would have been on point. I would have been intentional about it,” she added with frustration.

At the time, Tiwa Savage faced a storm of criticism. She was branded a “bad role model,” subjected to slut-shaming, and accused of trying to corrupt public morals. Yet, even at the height of the scandal, she refused to be silenced.

In her 2022 hit “Loaded” featuring Asake, Tiwa clapped back at the hypocrisy, pointing out that society was acting as though she was “the first woman to have sex.” She reminded critics that a fleeting private moment could not erase her years of success in music.

Her remarks highlight a wider issue: the failure to recognize revenge porn for what it is, a violation of consent and a form of abuse. Rather than being vilified, survivors like Tiwa deserve empathy, protection, and justice.

By speaking out, Tiwa Savage continues to reclaim her narrative not as a scandalised celebrity, but as a woman who refused to be broken by a system that too often blames victims instead of offenders.
