Tiwa Savage calls for Tems’ inclusion in Afrobeats ‘Big 3’ conversation

Afrobeats icon Tiwa Savage has reignited debate around the genre’s most celebrated stars after declaring it “unfair” to discuss the famous “Big 3” without including Tems.
For years, the “Big 3” has been shorthand for Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy — three male powerhouses credited with elevating Afrobeats to global recognition. But in a recent interview, Tiwa challenged the long-standing label, arguing that Tems’ meteoric rise demands equal recognition.
“I also feel like it’s unfair to have that conversation about the Big 3 and not mention someone like Tems,” Tiwa said during the chat, clad in a black leather jacket and speaking with calm conviction.
Her comments quickly lit up social media, with many fans applauding her for highlighting female representation in a male-dominated narrative. Tems’ career stats support Tiwa’s stance: she is a Grammy winner, a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and a collaborator with some of the world’s biggest artists.
Tiwa’s remarks come as Afrobeats undergoes a generational shift. Alongside Tems, stars like Rema, Ayra Starr, and Asake are redefining the genre’s sound and reach. The bigger question now is whether it’s time to rethink what the “Big 3” really means in today’s Afrobeats landscape.
