Popular Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about her intentional approach to single parenting, revealing why she is raising her son, Jamil Balogun, away from excessive privilege despite her immense success and wealth.

Speaking on her official Instagram page, the award-winning singer aligned her views with advice from renowned business leader Ibukun Awosika, who often cautions against overindulging children. Savage explained that shielding kids from struggle can weaken their ambition and reduce their drive to pursue meaningful goals later in life.
According to Tiwa, she wants her 10-year-old son to understand the value of effort, discipline, and gratitude, rather than having constant access to luxury. She deliberately exposes him to everyday experiences that foster humility and resilience.
One example she shared is choosing commercial flights and seating Jamil in economy class whenever private travel isn’t necessary.
She recounted a time when her son was visibly unhappy on a commercial flight, complaining about discomfort. Despite his reaction, Savage said these experiences are crucial for helping him appreciate life beyond comfort and privilege, shaping character rather than entitlement.
Beyond travel, she implements a reward-based system at home, requiring Jamil to earn certain privileges, like purchasing online games, through completing chores or achieving good academic results.
Additionally, she limits his access to gadgets, snacks, and sweets during the week, focusing instead on structure and routine.
Faith also plays a central role in her parenting. Tiwa ensures Jamil participates in Bible study every night before bed, aiming to ground him spiritually and morally from an early age.
Savage emphasized that her approach comes from love and intentionality, not strictness. She described Jamil as well-behaved and stressed that her goal is to lay a strong foundation that will guide him as he grows.
By sharing her parenting philosophy publicly, Tiwa has sparked discussions online about raising children in affluent homes and striking a balance between providing comfort and fostering ambition. For her, true success in parenting lies not in what a child is given, but in how well they are prepared for life beyond privilege.
