Even legends can get it wrong sometimes, and Tiwa Savage is the first to admit it.
In a recent sit-down with NotJustOk, the award-winning Afrobeats queen shared a hilarious yet humbling story about one of her biggest hits, “Dorobucci,” revealing that she initially thought the song was, in her own words, “crap.”

According to Tiwa, the now-iconic Mavin Records anthem almost didn’t feature her at all. At the time, she was in Dubai for her wedding, and producer Don Jazzy wouldn’t stop playing an early version of the track.
“He kept playing it over and over again,” Tiwa recalled with a laugh. “I honestly thought it was crap, but I couldn’t tell him that — it was my wedding week!”
Don Jazzy, however, saw something she didn’t. After the wedding, he convinced her to return to Nigeria to record her verse, even though Tiwa thought she was preparing for her honeymoon.
When she finally stepped into the studio and heard the finished version, she was completely blown away.
“It was flabbergasting,” she admitted. “I couldn’t believe it was the same song.”
Interestingly, Tiwa revealed she was the last artist to record her verse, mostly because she wasn’t convinced the song would work. She even compared her doubts about Dorobucci to her earlier skepticism about “Eminado” — another massive hit she once underestimated.
Of course, Dorobucci went on to become one of Mavin Records’ biggest anthems, defining an era of Afrobeats and cementing the label’s cultural dominance.
Reflecting on it now, Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s creative vision, describing him as a genius with an unmatched ear for hits.
“He proved me wrong again,” she said. “That song changed everything — it taught me to always trust the process.”
Tiwa ended her reflection with a warm shout-out to her longtime collaborator, calling Dorobucci a “phenomenal record” that reminded her of the power of teamwork, intuition, and faith in sound.
