Timaya says the Headies is worse than the Grammys
Timaya has shared his perspective on the outcomes of the recent 66th Grammy Awards, where Nigerian artists failed to secure any wins despite receiving 10 nominations.
Following the ceremony, reactions continued to pour in, with some members of the public suggesting that the Recording Academy utilized Afrobeats nominations merely for clout. However, Nigerian dancehall legend Timaya disagreed with this notion.
In an interview with Beat FM, Timaya expressed his belief that there is no need for Nigerian artists to rely solely on local awards, as he perceives the existing accolades, such as the Headies, to lack credibility.
Timaya emphasized that the loss at the Grammy Awards should not discourage Nigerian superstars but rather serve as motivation to strive harder in their endeavors. He urged artists to use setbacks as inspiration to push boundaries and achieve greater success.

The Recording Academy has faced criticism following Burna Boy, Davido, Asake & Olamide, and Ayra Starr’s failure to secure any awards at the recent ceremony.
Despite nominations, Davido’s ‘Unavailable‘, Asake & Olamide’s ‘Amapiano‘, Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush‘, and Burna Boy’s ‘City Boy‘ were defeated in the Best African Music Performance category by Tyla’s ‘Water‘.
Additionally, Davido’s ‘Feel‘ and Burna Boy’s ‘Alone‘ lost the Best Global Music Performance category to ‘Pashto‘ by Bรฉla Fleck, Edgar Meyer & Zakir Hussain Featuring Rakesh Chaurasia.
Similarly, Davido’s ‘Timeless‘ and Burna Boy’s ‘I Told Them‘ were unsuccessful in the Best Global Album category, won by Shakti’s ‘The Moment‘.
Recording Academy president Harvey Mason addressed the criticism in an interview, stating that Grammy winners are determined solely by the voting body’s opinions each year. Mason emphasized that the quality of a song, not its commercial success, dictates the Grammy recipients.
In related news, following the 66th Grammys, the Headies announced that its awards ceremony will return to Nigeria for its 17th edition.
