Timaya reflects on enduring legacy, faith, and music industry insights
In an exclusive interview, Afro-dancehall icon Timaya reflected on his two-decade career, sharing insights on consistency, faith, and advice for aspiring artists.
The award-winning artist, known for hits like “Dem Mama” and “Plantain Boy,” took pride in his longevity. “I’m a fighter; I keep pushing forward,” Timaya said, attributing his sustained success to resilience. “Among all the OGs, I’m the most consistent — I can say that with confidence.”
Addressing rumours about his potential retirement, Timaya shut them down. “My life is my career. A native doctor remains a native doctor for life,” he explained, emphasizing that music is inseparable from who he is, with no plans to step away from it.
On the subject of faith, Timaya openly declared, “I believe in God; I’m a Christian.” His spiritual beliefs often influence his music, as heard in gospel-tinged tracks like “Ogologoma” and “Blessings.”
Offering guidance to upcoming artists, Timaya warned against seeking instant fame and the dangers of substance abuse. “Drugs aren’t the answer; they’re just an illusion. Focus on building longevity,” he advised, stressing the importance of commitment, originality, and strategy.
With nine studio albums to his name, including his latest project, “Gladiator“, Timaya continues solidifying his legacy as one of Africa’s most enduring and influential musicians.
